BEAUTIFUL UNIQUE HARMONY MARQUIS IN FRANCE

Harmony Marquis - Glenn in France

This has got to be the most beautiful Harmony Marquis I have ever seen and most certainly the most unique one.  It is my opinion that this is a very early Marquis built in Japan because the headstock appears to be the Gibson style open book shape and would predate the famous Gibson lawsuit over this headstock design infringing on their patented headstock.

Here is the email that Glenn sent me with the pictures.  If you have any information on this Marquis please leave a comment.

FROM GLENN IN FRANCE

Hello from France
I was lucky enough find and buy a Harmony Marquis from a friend's pawn shop in Delaware in 1997 (for 110 US $ including the original case).
I have NEVER found another Harmony that resembles this one.  Has very thin multi-layer through neck (looks like maple + mahogany + ebony ?) and what I think are late 60's early 70's Gibson PAF pick ups.
Almost mint condition, extremely nice to play and a real screamer with the Gibson pick-ups. Tremendous variety of sounds from mellow clear jazzy to Angus Young SG crunch.
I have always wondered if it is some sort of one-off Custom Shop sort of deal, I have never seen another like it and there is no serial number anywhere.
What do you think ? Any information you may have is more than welcome.
Enjoy the pictures

NOTE FROM DOC KAZOO
At this time I will not be moving the contents of the Harmony Marquis Owners Group from my website to the blog.  I will simply pick up posting updates here on the blog starting today.  At some point I will get all the Marquis pictures moved to the blog.  Until then you can view older Marquis pictures on my website at:

  1. just wanted to say that i have the EXACT same marquis that i found at my local flea market years and years ago. ive been searching the internet since then to find any kind of information about it and have yet to find anything except this post. mine looked to be all original with no name pickups, it was in pretty rough condition when i got it, the pickups were falling out, volume and tone knobs missing and half of the tuning keys were broken. i only paid $20 for it and had plans to restore it but still haven't been able to because i found out the stock body holes wont work with a replacement bridge and tailpiece and i REALLY dont want to mess up the awesome body. So happy to finally see another one of these guitars! If you find any more info out about these let me know! jollyxroger06@gmail.com

  3. I have this same guitar and have been searching for information on it. There doesn't appear to be a serial number of stamp anywhere, and of course it's a neck-through, so there's no plate behind the neck for a serial number to sit on.

I found mine in a forgotten corner of the house of my girlfriend when we were moving out and she said I could have it. I thought it was probably a piece of junk but I was totally blown away when I picked it up and started playing it. As soon as I strummed the open strings (old and out of tune as they were) I was immediately struck by the vibrancy and clarity of the tone, and when I finally got around to plugging it in and playing it for real I was blown away by how nice it was to play and how great it sounded.

I'd love to find out more about it.

  5. I have one just like this, but red. It had mis-matched pickups, and I replaced them with two SD P-Rails and installed four push-pull pots to control the P-Rails (which can set them each to single coil, P-90, humbucker-series, or humbucker-parallel). It is very versatile.

  6. I have this same guitar. My wife gave it to me when we started dating. Her old step dad gave it to her. He had it through the 80s and 90s. I don't know if it's origin beyond that.

Mine has a sightly bowed neck, which is a real shame. I had a professional look at it years ago, and he couldn't fix it.

    I'm from Michigan.
